Car Service from JFK to Hartford vs. Amtrak and Metro-North: The Definitive Transit Breakdown

Executive Car Service from JFK to D.C. Turn Transit into 4 Billable Hours

While taking the train from Hartford, many of the articles take this scenario the wrong way. If you are taking the train from NYC to Hartford, you see many pieces of advice that the train departs from Penn Station and reaches Hartford, and the price of the ticket. These are helpful guides, but most of them don’t talk about when the trip starts or where the travellers are present.

While you are reading this, maybe you are with your luggage at JFK airport —you just arrived from the flight and with your family and want to speed up towards Hartford, Windsor, New Britain and your destination of meeting.

The issue is many comparisons of the trains forget about the time and hassles required to reach JFK, then to Penn Station. You begin your trip at JFK, not in Manhattan, and for the trip from JFK to Hartford, we compare trains and private cars, which is much better. The time required is about 2 hours and 38 minutes. This is only required on the Amtrak train, without any hassles or extra steps, and it also adds extra time from JFK to the stations.

Introduction: The Real Journey Envelope

The main comparison from this you may easily figure out, and then you also start understanding the comparison of others.

This full journey envelope: its measurement of the whole time and cost from where you start the first step of your trip and then towards your final destination.not just from one station to another — the door-to-door travel.

Many train and car comparisons only show you one thing: that the train is passing from one station to another. They only include the train cost and time — these are real, but the point is they don’t talk about where they actually start their trip at JFK.

For instance, moving from JFK and then to the Manhattan train station requires 30 to 75 minutes. This includes a lot of waiting, extra money, and the danger of delays and hassles. This full journey involves moving from JFK towards the train station, taking the train from the station and then arriving at your final destination.

The train company easily says that the train ride takes — 2 hours and 38 minutes, but it does not mean that your whole train trip requires that time. They completely neglected the time and cost from the airport—they are not wrong; they just did not fully explain the trip.

By using this same structure of the full journey — with the other steps in the previous sequences do the measurement of train and car options. We do not develop numbers randomly —if we don’t have any proper confirmation about any number in any option, instead of just guessing, simply we simply say that it’s not sure.

The Leg Nobody Quotes: JFK to Manhattan Stations

Before you have any train, firstly you leave JFK airport and then go towards Penn station/ Grand Central. These are real steps to go through, and none of them is very quick.
AirTrain + LIRR to Penn Station—this is a very fast option, and many pieces of advice suggest it.

The train arrives every 4- 8 minutes — and to reach the Jamaica station, it requires 10-15 minutes; then from Jamaica, your transfer towards the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) takes 20 minutes to reach Penn Station.

The total time is 30-35 minutes for JFK to Penn Station. The Airtrain costs about $8.50–$8.75. The LIRR costs about $5.25–$11.25, but it depends on traffic conditions and time of day.

So, the total is $14–$19. From JFK to Penn Station, the AirTrain and LIRR are a fast option — but also add 30- 35 minutes with extra transfers even before your Hartford trip starts.
It can be the best option if you have an idea of where to get the AirTrain at JFK, purchase a ticket, and then get the LIRR without a 20-minute wait.

And from the stairs and platforms, and transfers, you feel comfortable holding your bags —for a business traveller who carries one bag, so it’s easy for them. But it can be difficult for those who carry lots of bags with children and car seats.

It’s not always good to say that the train is a less costly option — also count the extra time you require, the cost, and the transfer throughout the whole journey.

AirTrain + Subway — this is a less costly option from the Jamaica Station; you have to take the train and then take the subway train towards midtown Manhattan.

The total cost and time is about — $11.40–$11.75 and 50–75 minutes, and passing through the stairs from the rush areas and no confirmation of having a seat. It is a very low-cost option from New York, but it is very slow compared to the other three options.

This can be hectic if the Amtrak or Metro-North train departs at a specific time—the reason is you can’t handle the delays and hassles.

Taxi and rideshare to Midtown: from JFK to Manhattan the yellow taxi requires a charge of $70 — but by adding the congestion fee, tolls and other tips, the complete cost is about $90–$115. When the traffic conditions are normal, the trip takes about 45–60 minutes – but it can take longer in bad weather and with more traffic.

This all causes the problem: when you take the train,; these delays can easily make you miss your train. The train travel takes 2 hours and 38 minutes. After that, when you go farther, like JFK to Hartford, it takes more time because of our travel from JFK to Penn Station.

And you must add these:

  1. The extra time takes more than 30 minutes.
  2. And the train option costs more than $14.
  3. And when you take a rideshare, it takes more than 45–60 minutes and costs $90–$115.

Before your train trip starts —a taxi or rideshare requires more than 1 hour and costs $100. While doing a comparison between the car and train from JFK to Hartford, you must see the entire trip, not only the cost and time. And this important part of the piece many of the guides miss out.

Path One: The Direct Amtrak Run via Penn Station

If you are already at Penn Station, then taking the train towards Hartford is a better option. From New York to the Hartford Union Station there are three options of train. Here you don’t change trains.

For the fast trip, it requires a time of 2 hours 38 – 41 minutes, and for the average trip it takes about 2 hours 55 minutes and covers a distance of 98–100 miles.

Normally, the ticket price is $16–$75, but it depends on the train, the time you book, and the business class. This can be a better option for the Northeast Corridor — if you are already at Penn Station and it’s hard to disagree with it.

And here with a one seat and not any transfers and a one bathroom in the train and also less price of ticket.

The train is not the problem, the problem is the timetable. In one day there are three Amtrak trains of Amtrak — so you manage your timetable according to this. The first train departs at 11:20 AM. In the morning, there is no direct train option.

Like, in the morning if you arrive at JFK and then move towards Hartford for a meeting at 9 am — then the train is not for you. The direct and last train departs at 8:50 pm and reaches Hartford at 11:56 PM — this can work for the late trip at night, and you also plan your schedule according to them.

And when you reach the Hartford union station, you still have to travel to reach your actual destination. Such as the insurance office downtown in West Hartford there is a home and a business campus in New Britain.

If we don’t have any surety about numbers — so we are not making any trip cost and time for the whole trip.

Downtown Hartford: it has a distance of 0.5 — 1 mile and also takes 5–10 minutes, and by taxi and rideshare it takes 3 minutes and costs $8–$12.

West Hartford Centre: it is about 4–5 miles, and by taxi and rideshare it takes 10–15 minutes and cost is $15–$22.

New Britain / CCSU Campus: it is 10–12 miles, and by taxi it takes about 15–20 minutes and costs $25–$35.

The normal buses on CTfastrak can be less costly, about $1.75–$2.00 — but the taxi and rideshares can be an easy option if you have luggage.

Trains don’t get you towards your final destination directly — you still have to do one more ride after traveling from the train.

Path Two: Metro-North + CTrail Hartford Line via New Haven

The other option is metro north and it’s more difficult than the Amtrak train option — and that is why many of the travel advice don’t talk about its total cost and time. It begins from the grand central route, not at Penn Station.

From Grand Central, you take the Metro-North New Haven Line towards New Haven. Many of the trains arrive at New Haven and require 88–90 minutes.

Don’t think every train is very fast; the normal train can take 98 minutes and even 2 hours + as well.

When you take the train, it is based on arrival at Grand Central and the express train departures. It is very hard for you to manage your timetables, especially when you are from the JFK airport from a flight.

You have to change trains at the new heaven union station — you have to take the CTrail Hartford Line train or a train to Hartford. And if it is faster, it takes 40 minutes. And if it is a slow train, it is about 1 hour 20 minutes.

For another train, you still have to wait for 15–30 minutes. By adding the transfers, the whole trip from Grand Central to Hartford takes 3.5 to 4 hours. This route has one benefit — Hartford has some stops at the areas like Berlin, Windsor, and Windsor Locks.

It provides the passengers in a day three departures — rather than the Amtrak train. If your final location is just near these areas—Windsor Locks, Granby then this provides you towards your final location rather than taking a train from downtown Hartford.

This route is very uncertain —- here you have two options of train one have stops/transfers. So when any delay occurs on the first option, it affects the second one. You leave the Hartford train line when the Metro train arrives late, and then you wait for the other train for 30–60 minutes.

In contrast, the Amtrak train has only one train ride, and lots of risks of delays can occur here, along with more waiting. During the travel times of Metro-North, the 2 hours and Hartford Line require 80 minutes; when these add up, the travel becomes very difficult.
